Bullying
Bullying is a serious issue that has been greatly reduced for the past 10 years. More and more people are starting to see that bullying is actually a major concern in our country's youth and how it can affect their lives in negative ways. Some cases are a lot more serious than others but we shouldn't let that blind you from the fact that it should still try to be reduced by helping those who are bullied and those who are the bullies. I have the privilege to not have suffered from such a catastrophic incident and I do feel sorry for those who have suffered and mourn those who have passed away as they couldn't take the pain any longer. Bullying is a real world issue that shouldn't be thrown away in the abyss and should try to be solved.
During my time as a 9th grader at Maywood Academy, I was shown films that describe bullying from a victim's perspective. It really helped open my eyes on the situation and has made me pay a lot more attention to the world around me. I started to notice a lot of small things that people from those films were suffering from in real life. I would've never noticed such horrendous things occurring and how they affect people if I didn't watch those films. I started to actually think before I said some controversial comments as some may see it as a joke and others as something that isn't right. Bullying can happen both in physically and mentally. The scariest thing is that most parents don't even realize that their children are being hurt by the day and losing confidence on themselves. Situations can range form name calling in school to people "exposing" or "leaking" private information that can very easily ruin a person's own life. Sadly there are a few cases where people have took their own life which unfortunately was the only exit they saw. Many things like this can be prevented if adults pay more attention and victims stop thinking like there is no way out and actually start trying to help themselves because things like this can end up catching up to them in the long run. Bullying is a problem that can be solved and the only tool we need is to help each other. |
Square Dancing
Square dancing is a form of dancing that has been here since the 16th century as far away as England and France. It is a form of socializing and exercising but more importantly, it us fun and can really help you meet others that you usually wouldn't of met. Square dancing combines a lot of things into one extremely fun environment. A really interesting fact is that a lot of countries such as the United States have their national dance or square dance. Dancing is a tradition or custom in today's modern society.
I recently learned a few dances myself while attending my 6th period Physical Education class. I learned a few dance moves such as "the right and left grand" and "do si do." I learned all of this while being part of a group of 8 people trying to get the hang of square dancing and I believe that by the end of the whole unit, we became friends and now recognize each other in school. Square dancing can seem weird at first because that is what I felt, but after the first day you just feel like you want to master the dance in order to use them somewhere else. I can say that I at least learned one thing new about square dancing each day and I am extremely grateful. In conclusion, square dancing can become an important aspect in your life as it can come in handy in countless ways such as meeting people or exercising even. Square dancing has also taught me an important skill which was to work with people in order to reach something. That "something" for me was practicing every dance that was thrown at me and perfecting it. I also ended making a few friends that I would've never even talked to or even said a simple hello because in order to succeed in such a task, people have to work together in order for everyone to make it out successfully. Square dancing can really help you a lot in life as it isn't just a dance, it's something that you will remember and will greatly affect your life in a positive way. |
